The Truth About Skiboards

June 5, 2017 by Richard Roberts Leave a Comment

Just got to thinking about why do I ride, sell and design skiboards. Obviously, I’m into this sport as more than just a business, and for good reason. Skiboards make riding the slopes almost effortless right from the start and then it just gets better and better and better, rapidly. No more hassling with equipment (what a relief) or having to attend to turning, stopping, deciding if I can take a particular run. True freedom is my experience.  I get to fully enjoy the day riding with friends and family and loving being outdoors.

I still find that most people at the mountain either look at me oddly or ask “what are they?” and this is after 17 years. Obviously these are not mainstream riding tools on the slopes, not sure they ever will be. Riding skiboards, you’re no longer “in-the-box”, doing what everyone else does. As such, not just the skiboards, but this very act frees skiboarders from the conventional. The stage is set to not only have fun, but really know true liberation.

It’s interesting that it was right at the time I was finishing my doctoral dissertation that skiboards emerged on the scene. What I was investigating was the experience of the Zone in sports, those moments when you completely let go into the experience, thinking stops, and you become fully present in the moment. Pure joy is the result.

This happens after a person is completely confident in their sport. And, here is where skiboards come in. The learning curve is so short, it’s so easy to master snowriding, that it frees you to experience the Zone on a regular basis. This experience is usually only known by long term skiers and snowboarders (who have paid their dues). Now the experience is available to anyone and to me, that is why I love skiboards. Living out of the box, playing on the mountain, enjoying the sheer pleasure of going anywhere you care to, a whole new adventure emerges and every day brings something new to explore.

This is the truth about skiboards. Stepping out of the whole ski/snowboard paradigm, a person is truly free to enjoy frequent moments of ecstasy flowing down the slopes, at one with the whole experience. And I am in the unique position to hear from people all over the world who are having the same experience as I. Skiboards impact more than just your snowriding abilities, it opens you to the feeling of being fully alive.

Skiboards – Break Out of the Conventional and Express Yourself

April 5, 2017 by Richard Roberts Leave a Comment

Skiboards – Break Out of the Conventional and Express Yourself. You know, lessons, poles, traveling with all that equipment. Skiboards are very much under the radar with most retail store sales people clueless when you ask about them. Fun is what it’s all about, not rules. Break out of the old ways and treat yourself to the experience of liberation that skiboards can provide. Be on the vanguard of something new.

Those who’re often interested in trying skiboards are usually, I find, individuals who aren’t driven to fit into existing social structures. They love trying new things and don’t allow fear (or what others think) to stand in their way. Carl Jung calls it individuating or becoming your own person. Abraham Maslow calls it self-actualizing. This is that natural, inherent tendency to become the unique individual that you are.Irrational Man 2015 film trailer

What I find even more interesting is that many new skiboarders share that they do have to overcome the opinions of others, not to mention the resistance often met with at the ski resort rental shops. In spite of this, they follow their inner promptings and discover the secret. While conventional thought often can be a deterrent to exploring something new, be it skiboards or whatever, breaking out of these patterns helps you to step ‘out of the box.’

Breaking out of conventional thinking regarding how we should ride the slopes, we can all continue to spark our natural playful instincts. Experimenting, trying new things, seeing what is truly possible and exploring our limits, that is what skiboarding is about. I personally was truly amazed when I discovered that riding through the moguls backwards was now possible.

Summit Rocker Invertigo 118 – Wow!

February 5, 2017 by Richard Roberts Leave a Comment

Summit Invertigo Rocker 3D 118cm Skiboards 2018

Blue sky, powder day at Wolf Creek, CO on Summit Rocker Invertigo 118 – Wow!. Must say I was a bit nervous. See I rode a somewhat similar prototype last season and created these from my experience as well as some complicated math. Anyway, you never know how something will perform when the products arrive for the season.

First, it was a 24″ base with 6-8″ of powder. Perfect conditions for testing the Rockers. I thought it might take a few runs to get used to them but nope – right from the first 10′ I was immediately comfortable with them. I had a huge smile on my face coming down the first run a semi-groomed run. Wow these really carve, feeling more like 99’s than 118’s. Yet fast, and so stable at speed. Amazingly smooth.

So I went on to try steeps, moguls, deeper powder, everything the mountain had to offer. The Rockers were superb, even better than I had planned for. In deeper snow, they ride up like a rocker would be expected to. I could not get enough, skipped lunch and just kept riding. One thing also noticeable was the numerous sweet spots in these skiboards, due to the rockered tips and tails and cambered mid-section. Super fun with a lot of riding styles to explore. Bottom line: I love these! I feel from my testing, these are truly an all-in-one skiboard, comfortable anywhere on the mountain and in any conditions. These have got to be the most fun ski in the summit arsenal.

Can’t wait to get up there again.

Greetings Fellow Skiboarders

December 22, 2016 by Richard Roberts Leave a Comment

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and planning on a great new year.  Appreciate all of you have joined our facebook page as it is great to talk with others who love the sport as much as I do.  Now that we have our blog backroom working again, I plan to post my thoughts as well as various questions that come up regarding skiboards and bindings, etc.

Just wanted to offer an inspiring exercise as we all enter the New Year. Here it is: Identify 3 people who have had the most positive impact on your life this past year and let them know the difference they made. Then ask them to pass it on as well.

Let’s spread a little love around to end this year on a positive note.

As for resolutions, perhaps spending more days on the mountain is always a good one. I find being in the mountains, riding the slopes and playing with gravity always gets me centered with a more creative, expanded outlook.

Happy New Year to all!

Outdoor Tech Helmet Audio Kits

December 5, 2016 by Richard Roberts Leave a Comment

We are excited to carry the new Outdoor Tech Helmet Audio Kits. These fit great in the our Salomon Hacker Helmet series. You can choose between the wired kits or the new bluetooth wireless kits. Both are hands free and will play great sounding music as well as answer your phone when needed. The Bluetooth kit also comes with a walkie talkie so you can talk with those friends or family on the mountain (or anyone else you meet).

In addition, for helmets that are not audio compatible such as our Salomon Hacker helmets, you can get the new K-Roo pouch that converts the helmet so it will accept one of the two kits above. Nothing like tunes while you ride!

You can check them out on our website under the helmet/goggles section.
