Construction of Summit Skiboards Custom 110cm:
We have been promoting the sport of skiboarding for over 9 years. In that time, we have not only sold, but ridden virtually every skiboard ever made.
We have tested, seen and ridden many, many skiboards from many different manufacturers and received feedback from thousands of customers. While we have
certainly loved all the skiboards, as each skiboard is truly unique in terms of look, feel and ride, it always seemed to us that there was a next step,
an evolution, in our sport, that was possible. After much research, over these many years, we began to formulate a plan to design the perfect skiboard.
Our plans came to fruition this summer, 2005, when we found just the right craftsman to make the skiboards we had envisioned.
With a reputation for creating the best skis in the world, LaCroix skis, a family owned business and true ski craftsmen, sell for upwards of
$1800 per pair. We are fortunate to have found LaCroix to handcraft our skiboards. No one else could have helped us realize our vision and we simply
wouldn't trust anyone else to make these custom skiboards. Lacroix are true craftsmen, with the knowledge and expertise to produce high end, high
performance skiboards like nothing that has ever been seen or ridden before. As L. P. Lacroix states, "We can do what others won't, with a character
and passion. " This is the passion that is behind these skiboards.
The core is absolutely vital to the performance of a skiboard. With the Custom 110cm, each pair is made with identically matching solid ash
wood cores in order to get two, perfectly identical, skiboards with the same exact flex in each board. As L. P. Lacroix comments, "Ash is a magic
wood for skis. It absorbs vibration and has the best flex of any other wood used as cores." These solid Ash cores are hand selected, choosing only
the absolutely best to be used in our skiboards. The wood that is chosen is chosen first in mid-range altitude to insure the right flex, while at
the same time, making sure the wood is not too "nervous". The ash is then cut into planks, dried at 9% humidity, then cut again into smaller sections
and then reselected to obtain only the best quality, highest performing cores for our skiboards. All ash cores are fully laminated tip to tail,
developed with a thicker than usual lamination.
All construction was conducted in the LaCroix plant in France and personally overseen by master ski craftsman, L. P. LaCroix, himself.
Every pair is hand made one at a time. These are not mass produced. No details were overlooked in the production process. The whole structure
of the skiboards are made of the same living, high energy, ash wood, which is stabilized and reinforced with a special layer of composite.
The composite layer runs tip to tail and is composed of a unidirectional fiber with variable angle and weight. The topsheet is 2 mm ash, which
provides a beautiful, hand crafted look as well as adding just the right amount of reinforcement to add further to the strength and durability of these skiboards.
A specially formulated varnish made especially by Basler of Switzerland, is applied. A wood skiboard needs a varnish that is flexible, resistant to
UV rays and one that will allow for wide ranges in temperature which is why Basler was chosen. Two coats of a special resin-varnish are applied first
and then 3 coats of a finish varnish are applied to provide a beautiful, one of a kind look. Basler has been in the specialized varnish craft for over 20 years.
Prior to production, the prototypes were thoroughly tested in the rugged mountains of Colorado. Ridden on solid ice, hardpack, in crud and yes,
even powder, these were put to the test. The result: the 110cm performed incredibly well and even beyond our expectations (which are considerable).
As Doc Roberts, President, of Skiboards Superstore comments, "these are absolutely the best skiboards I have ever ridden. They are incredibly stable
at speed, carve like a knife through butter, and provide a smooth ride like no other. I know what I am riding next season. Ludovic LaCroix is a master
at his craft. This 110cm skiboard takes performance to an all new height and breathes new life into the sport of skiboarding." In other words, we are
delighted to be able to offer this addition to our sport.
Features:
Wood core: hand selected solid ash tip to tail. Ash is the perfect wood for maximum performance in all mountain conditions and works exceptionally
well on skiboards. The solid ash core is fully laminated from tip to tail with a much thicker lamination than usually used in skiboards (or skis and
snowboards for that matter). The thicker lamination maintains the energy of the wood as well as making them more durable and long lasting.
Centered stance: 4 stainless steel inserts are centered within the Custom 110, in a standard 40 X 40mm skiboard binding mount pattern. A centered
stance gives you greater flexibility in customizing your preferred riding position.
Edges: 360 full wrap carbon steel edges. Edges are made with high density carbon steel which comes from Trefilerie des Vosges, the same supplier of
Rossignol's high end skis. Edges are sand blasted prior to assembly to ensure a perfect fit. These edges protect your skiboards from those unexpected dings.
Symmetrical Twin-tips: Make it easier to ride forwards as well as backwards. Excellent handling in the parks and pipes. Makes for the most perfect carves.
Top Sheet: Hand selected Ash wood tip to tail. Top sheets are coated with specially formulated varnish, made by Basler of Switzerland to highlight
the beauty of these skiboards while also preserving and protecting the wood core.
Printing: Hand silk screening and laser etching.
Bases: Graphite Sintered. This is one of the best base materials for durability, maximum wax absorption and speed. The bases are black to make it easier
to fix gouges and have repairs blend so your skiboards look new again.
Warranty: 1 year. Covers delamination and other manufacture defects. This does not cover damage to the topsheet or damage from improper storage.
Storage: Proper storage is important. Ash is a living material and should be stored in a low humidity area at moderate temperature that is exposed
to fresh air. Make sure after use that you wipe off excess moisture. It is recommended to remove your skiboards from your skiboard bag for proper drying before storage.
Tuning: All Summit Custom 110cm skiboards come waxed, fully tuned and ready to ride. You aren't going to want to wait to ride these any more than
you have to. We recommend using the Skiboards.com Tune kit to maintain your skiboards.
Recommended bindings: Release bindings such as: Spruce Mountain Risers/ Salomon Release bindings,
Black Diamond Fritschi Explore, or Black Diamond Fritschi Freeride.
About the Custom 110cm and Non-release bindings: While there are currently no specific guidelines or laws preventing the use of non-release bindings
on skiboards up to 140cm, the longer length skiboards when used with non-release bindings do increase the risk of injury. Should you choose to use non-release
bindings with these, you do so at your own risk knowing full well that there is the chance of serious injury. Please keep this in mind when purchasing the Custom
110cm with non-release bindings, such as the Bomber. We do recommend that only those who consider themselves advanced riders should attempt to use Bomber bindings
on the Custom 110.
